Tooth Fractures – What Should You Do?

If you’ve ever broken an arm or leg, you know intimately that things snap in several different ways. Additionally, the way something breaks determines the proper response. These principles also apply to tooth damage where part or all of your tooth has broken.

But one difference between a broken tooth and a broken bone is that bone heals, regenerating its structure to heal the fracture. In contrast, your tooth is irreplaceable and won’t just heal itself. This is why you should call the team at Telopea Park Dental. We have loads of experience treating tooth damage of every form.

When it comes to fractures, we will first determine if your tooth is chipped, cracked or, in rare cases, has been completely knocked out.

What to Do with Chips or Minor Breaks

Even minor tooth fractures can allow bacteria into your tooth, where it can grow unabated. This condition can inflame your inner tooth, impacting the nerve and causing debilitating pain. You’re better off treating it before it reaches this point. Additionally, minor fractures should be fixed before they grow into cracks and threaten the tooth.

We can address this breakage type through several different restorations. Dental bonding is when Dr Kropinak uses composite resin to seal and hide the damage. We shade this material to blend in with your tooth’s natural colour. We may also offer porcelain dental veneers for more significant fixes or a dental crown if the damage is too severe.

When Is A Broken Tooth A Dental Emergency?

The instance you need to treat urgently is a fully knocked-out or avulsed tooth. This happens when one of your permanent teeth comes out intact due to an extremely hard impact. In this case, your immediate action may save an otherwise doomed tooth.

We recommend you follow these guidelines:

  • Handle the tooth by the crown – don’t touch the roots
  • If the tooth is dirty, don’t wipe it; rinse carefully with warm water
  • Try to slip it back into its socket gently
  • Otherwise, keep the tooth moist in saliva or milk
  • Quickly call our Garran dental clinic for immediate care.
