Wisdom Teeth Extraction Near Me

Going to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially when a visit involves a wisdom tooth extraction.
Wisdom tooth extractions are a common dental procedure performed by our experienced emergency dentist at Telopea Park Dental, Garran, ACT.  Even though we probably all know someone who have had their third molars (wisdom teeth) removed, it’s natural to be curious about dental extractions before going for the procedure ourselves. To address some common questions, we’ve outlined a brief guide on what to expect during a wisdom tooth extraction.

Assessment

At Telopea Park Dental, Canberra ACT, our experienced emergency dentist will firstly identify any problematic wisdom teeth, and recommended a full mouth x-ray (OPG) for further assessment. If the extraction looks routine or closed you can book back into our dental office to have one or more of your third molar wisdom teeth removed.
It’s not uncommon after OPG assessment that your wisdom tooth extraction will be complicated or surgical and be referred to one of the local Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMFS) for removal.

Local Anaesthesia

Before the actual tooth extraction, your dentist at Telopea Park Dental, Canberra ACT, will start by giving you a topical anaesthetic. After 1-2 min, a local anaesthetic injection will be given and the soft tissues surrounding the extraction area will start to become numb. Depending on the state of a tooth, such as whether it is infected or not, additional (supplemental) injections of local anaesthetic may be required.

If several teeth are removed at once, or if you are anxious about the procedure, you may request nitrous oxide or happy gas to help you through the procedure.

Extraction

The method of extraction can generally be divided into two categories: routine and surgical.
Routine (closed) extractions, typically only require local anaesthetic and nitrous oxide sedation. These types of tooth extractions are performed onsite at Telopea Park Dental, Garran ACT.
Surgical extractions, requiring IV sedation or GA, will be referred to one of the local Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMFS) in Canberra.

Follow-up

Your dentist at Telopea Park Dental, Garran, ACT, may ask you to schedule a follow-up in the week or so after a tooth extraction to ensure that everything is healing well. Going back to your dentist is especially important if you have stitches or experience any symptoms related to dry sockets.
