Many people wonder about the dos and don'ts after dental implant surgery, so here's what you need to know.

Dos and Don'ts after Dental Implants

Do Follow Your Dentist's Instructions

Your dentist will provide detailed instructions on caring for your mouth after dental implant surgery. Patients can trust us when we say our years of experience with implant dentistry directly benefit their success with recovery. For the first few days, you might need assistance with preparing food and taking medications.

Do Get Plenty of Rest

Although dental implant surgery is an outpatient procedure, plan to rest the day of. Rest is vital for the healing and recovery process. When lying down, prop up your head with pillows and keep your head elevated above your heart to maintain blood flow. This also helps reduce excessive bleeding and facial swelling.

Do Follow a Proper Post-Op Diet

Only consume soft, lukewarm foods and liquids, like soups, mashed potatoes, and yogurt. Be sure to eat slowly and follow the diet your dentist recommends for you.

Do Clean Your Mouth

Keep your mouth clean by rinsing it with warm salt water several times daily. It would help if you started doing this the second day following surgery. Rinsing is essential after eating as it removes food particles from your mouth. Eat foods rich in vitamins that promote healing, like vitamins A and C. Once you return to regular brushing and flossing, be gentle with your teeth and gums.

Don't Smoke or Drink Alcohol

Smoking or drinking alcohol after surgery makes it more difficult for the body to heal and can lead to implant failure. Smoking and drinking can also lead to complications like dry socket and oral infections. Don't drink alcohol for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Don't Use a Straw

Using a straw or placing other sharp utensils in the mouth can dislodge necessary blood clots or stitches.

Don't Exercise

Only exercise or participate in strenuous activities for the first few days after your procedure or until your dentist gives you the go-ahead.
